Audible Pleasure

Audible Pleasure

Let’s have a quick gander at Amazon’s audio book shop.

The skinny: Audible is an audio book service produced by Amazon. Audible essentially acts as a digital library of audio books- so just as you can now get music digitally, you can also get audio books digitally. As well as actual books. Magic!

I’m an audio book fan, so Audible has been my mate for a while. Sadly, I don’t get the time I used to for this (I used to listen at work, but now that I’m self-responsible, I find it too distracting). However, there are some great audio books out there. Many hardcore readers won’t see the point, but consider this- you can listen to audio books while having your hands free, or resting your eyes. Plus, the voice can really add something to the story. For me, the narration of Neil Gaiman’s Anansi Boys by Lenny Henry will stay with me forever! He captures the cheeky British feel of Gaiman’s writing, plus he does all the, erm, ‘blaccents’ with aplomb, bringing the characters to life.

The great thing about Audible is that you can have a free trial for 30 days, to see if you like it. With this you get:

  • One free audiobook of their choice.
  • The ability to choose from 150,000+ titles including best sellers, new releases, sci-fi, romances, mysteries, classics, and more.
  • After 30 days, if you choose not to cancel you will receive 1 book each month for just £7.99/month.

You can cancel easily any time. The audio books are yours to keep, even after cancelling.

May I also recommend the brand new Alien: Out of the Shadows. This is an original Audible production and has the full works- not just a narration, but voice actors for all the parts, sound effects and instrumental music! Aliens fans will love this story, which takes part between the first two movies (not unlike the video game Alien: Isolation).

So yes, give Audible a try and see if your love of books stretches to these lovingly produced audio works. A new way to consume fiction is always welcome to me!

Should I make an audiobook of Strange Matters, or one of my short stories?! Which one?
