Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and del Toro’s inSANE announced!
Today is a good day, with two tasty teaser trailers for us. Many people will still be cresting the wave of joy that came with World of Warcraft: Cataclysm’s release (more than 3.3 million copies sold on day 1- the fastest selling game of all time!). Well, this time next year they should be just as chuffed to see the release of the next Elder Scrolls game: Skyrim.
Following on from the success of Oblivion and the more recent success of Fallout: New Vegas, Bethesda are showing no signs of slowing the pace as they have just announced that Skyrim is in development.
“It’s exciting finally to announce the game,” said Todd Howard, Game Director for this fifth installment. “We’ve been working for many years on Skyrim and the technology behind it. A new Elder Scrolls game has been a long time coming, and we can’t wait to show it off.”
This suggests of course a much needed update to the engine used for Oblivion and Fallout. The release date is set for Novermber the 11th, 2011.
Meanwhile, THQ have just announced a multi-year agreement with Guillermo del Toro, the director and writer of Hellboy and Pan’s Labyrinth. Guillermo is personally overseeing the development of inSANE, a cheesily named but very promising trilogy of original games.
Naturally THQ are talking of a cinematic experience with a solid storytelling core, something that always grabs my attention, though what format the games will take is still a mystery. The first game will be released in 2013, quite some time from now.
THQ had this to say:
Del Toro will serve as external creative director for the games, working closely with THQ Executive Vice President, Core Games Danny Bilson, THQ Director of Fiction Development Paul DeMeo and THQ’s Volition, Inc. studio on the development of the trilogy. In addition, THQ and del Toro will collaborate on potential transmedia projects surrounding the inSANE games.
“THQ is committed to creating great games by identifying the world’s most talented artists and providing them with the creative support to design innovative game play experiences,” said Bilson. “Guillermo is not only an incredibly gifted writer and film director, but also an avid gamer, and we are excited to bring his talents to our medium. We are confident his unique point of view will create visually stunning adventures, filled with rich and rewarding game play.”
“With this new series of videogames, I want to take players to a place they have never seen before, where every single action makes them question their own senses of morality and reality,” said del Toro. “THQ and Volition, Inc. are equally excited to make this vision of a completely new game universe into a reality.”
