Our Daily Beard

Nickelodeon has released more joy into the mobile games arena.

With what?!

Turtle power, of course. The nostalgic among us may be pleased to see this game emerge.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Rooftop Run is Nick’s first worldwide mobile app, available in more than 150 countries and 8 languages. I think that, in itself, is quite the thing, don’t you?

A game distributed to 150 countries. If there’s ever any doubt as to the value- or power- of the mobile gaming platform, it should be quelled post haste. If we could do the same with something wholesome and educational…

Anyway, anthropomorphised turtles with martial arts. You can basically run and fight your way across the 3-D rooftops of New York as any of the four iconic amphibians: Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Banksy. Defeat the Kraang, save the day, waste 5 minutes on the bus or while you wait for your toast to pop. You have to run ahead of the Kraang’s tractor beam, creating your typical running related against-the-clock mobile game action. You can get power-ups and new weapons, all that jazz.

There’s more! You collect energy orbs to fill the energy meter. Once it’s full, you enter the suspicious ‘Turtle Time’, wherein you get a slow motion, zoomed in game mode and you tap the screen like your phone isn’t worth £400 and lots of baddies get cowabunga’d. I suspect that this energy meter thing is a metaphor for the souls that the Turtles reap from their foes, charging them with terrible bloodlust.

It’s not all violence! You can pop into a Turtle Lair (do turtles have lairs?!) to upgrade your turtle and get various boons which increase your… oh… you know… energy and coins and things. Basically, if you make the little numbers go up, then you can use them to make the numbers go up even faster.

It’s £1.49, mind. I’m more of a 69p bandit. Currently it’s just on iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.

Summarised like a boss:

Battle hoards of enemies from the Foot Clan, Kraang, and Dimension X

Activate Turtle Time to fight up close in a slow-motion combat sequence

Outfit the Turtles in exclusive Cyber and Stealth gear

Upgrade with weapons, gadgets and boosts like the Laserbot and Turtle Saver

Unlock and play as the Turtles’ formidable canine foe Dogpound

Earn rewards from the pizza time mini-game

Epic Boss Battles

Have YOU ever seen a turtle get down?

If you don’t get that reference, come back after a thorough googling.
