Kate hesitated for a few moments, then decided that there was no guarantee that Obie would last out while she looked for help. She tried to recall what she knew about dog attacks and hoped that it would work. She called to him over the sound of bestial laughter:
“Obie, listen to me! Don’t panic. You’re stronger than it. Stop kicking and get your arms around it. Squeeze the life out of it!”

While Splinters is taking longer to edit than expected, I wanted to get The Firebird out now, as a kind of introduction or teaser. Therefore, I’ve used the cover art I had made to go with the former to publish the latter as a standalone novella.
A dark muzzle pushed into the opening. The second Hyena threw itself against the gate while the first wedged in, both surprisingly strong. Kate let out a cry of alarm.
“Help me!” she commanded Obie.
